Professional bio
My name is Patrick Wanner and I am an anesthetist-intensivist and a clinical researcher specializing in perioperative and critical care.
My passions are taking care of critically ill patients, researching ways to make perioperative care safer and helping younger colleagues to discover the beauty of anesthesia, emergency medicine and critical care.
During the course of my Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine residencies, I’ve had the privilege of training at a multitude of Swiss institutions (Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Cantonal Hospital Baden, University Hospital Basel), gaining broad experience in critical care, perioperative care, as well as in preclinical and clinical emergency medicine. I have worked as a prehospital emergency physician for Swiss Air-Rescue (REGA) , as well as in the St. Gallen and Basel ambulance services.
As a clinical researcher I am investigating strategies to increase the safety of the perioperative care of high-risk surgical patients with a focus on hemodynamic management. Currently, I am a research fellow at the Population Health Research Institute and am seeking a Masters in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University.
Finally, as a tutor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel, a mentor in the Joint Medical Master Program of the Universities of St. Gallen and Zurich, as well as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor, I am regularly involved in teaching and mentoring activities.
